Find your perfect Tree

Are you in search of the perfect Christmas Tree for the holidays?

Here are some tips, tricks, and places to buy the best tree for your family.

Choosing a Tree

  • Avoid buying a Tree too early:  depending on the type of tree you should purchase it 2 - 3 weeks before Christmas at the earliest.  This will help take the pressure off of you trying to keep it looking fresh on Dec. 25th.
  • Check for Freshness:  grab a light hold of a branch and slide your hand towards you.  If little to no needles fall, it's pretty fresh.  If many pine needles fall, then you might want to pass on that tree.
  • Pick up the tree and shake it.  If many needles fall, the tree is already shedding and drying.  Once you take it to your heated home, the drying will continue at a faster speed.
  • Look for a tree with a pretty straight and full base.  This will help when placing it into a tree stand.  Crooked or thin tree bases require more work to fit it properly in the base without tilting.
  • Be sure to check the tree for insects and eggs.  Some tree farms might have shakers to help remove these or you can shake or blow them out yourself.  Insects and eggs do not mean it's an unhealthy tree.  Just be sure to clean it out before taking it into your home.

Home Care

  • Make a fresh cut at the Tree's base.  (Most nurseries and tree farms will do this for you, so be sure to ask.)  This will help it drink water.  Do Not let the water dry out. Once the tree has gone without water for a day or so, the trunk begins to seal itself.  If this happens, either your tree will continue to dry out or you would need to take it down and make another cut at the base.
  • Be sure to have a proper tree stand.  Place on a flat surface and be sure to fill with water regularly.
  • Avoid placing your tree close to heat sources like TVs, fireplaces, radiators and air ducts.  Try and put in a cooler area in your home.
  • Some families purchase Christmas tree preservatives while others do not.  Purchasing a liquid nutrient for your tree is up to you.
  • If your tree begins to lack that pine fresh scent prior to the big day, you can also purchase a pine scented candle or room spray.  Just be careful as some are very strong.
